A Frisco Landmark That’s Over 100 Years Old
If you’ve spent any time in downtown Frisco, you’ve seen it, the historic water tower rising above the Rail District.
What many people don’t realize is that the Frisco water tower is now over 100 years old, making it one of the oldest standing structures in the city.

Built to Support a Growing Town
In the early days of Frisco, water came from shallow wells and small private systems. But by the 1920s, the growing town needed something more reliable.
In 1923, the city purchased the privately owned water works, and by 1924, construction began on the tower. It was built with a 50,000-gallon capacity, an important upgrade for the town at the time.
The City’s Main Water Source for Decades
For many years, the water tower served as Frisco’s only elevated water storage system. It remained a key part of the city’s infrastructure until 1985.
Back then, it had a simple look, painted silver with “Frisco” in bold black letters, similar to many small Texas towns.
Nearly Lost in the 1990s
By the mid to late 1990s, the water tower had fallen into disrepair. It was considered unsafe, condemned, and scheduled for demolition.
At the time, city leadership believed there was no funding available to restore it, and removing the structure seemed like the only option.
But before demolition could happen, a local effort helped change the outcome.
According to longtime residents, a telecommunications company stepped in with an offer to cover the cost of repairs and convert the nearby building at the base into space for cellular equipment. In return, they secured a long-term lease.
The city agreed, and the water tower was saved.
From Utility to Icon
Today, the water tower no longer serves its original purpose, but it remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in Frisco.
Now painted white with a red top and the Frisco logo, it stands as a centerpiece of the Rail District and a reminder of the city’s early days.

A Modern Touch to a Historic Structure
In recent years, the tower has been updated with LED lighting, allowing it to change colors for events, celebrations, and local milestones.
From school achievements to major sports wins, the water tower continues to reflect the community around it.
Still Standing Today
Frisco has grown rapidly, but the water tower is still here, unchanged in structure but different in purpose.
It’s no longer just part of the city’s infrastructure. It’s a symbol of how far Frisco has come, and how close it came to losing a piece of its history.
